An Engine Management Light (EML) or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is also known as a ‘check engine light’. Its a tell tale to indicate a malfunction of a computerised engine management system.
It is found on the instrument panel of most vehicles. When illuminated it is typically either red or amber in colour. On vehicles equipped with OBD-II (On Board Diagnostics 2) the light has two stages: steady indicates a minor fault and flashing indicates a severe fault. A servere fault could potentially damage the catalytic converter if left uncorrected for an extended period.
Either stage calls for a diagnostic check with a scanner or at least a fault code reader. Call and book your vehicle with Autoexperts Medway. We are based in Gillingham in the centre of Medway. We will then carry out some basic checks before conducting some more in depth diagnostic testing.
When the Malfunction Indicator Lamp is lit, the engine control unit will store a fault code. This fault code will related to the malfunction. This code is easily retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis.
The malfunction indicator symbol is usually a pictogram of an engine. While with some manufacturers or it may show ‘CHECK ENGINE’, ‘SERVICE ENGINE SOON’.
