The most common headlamp bulb is a double filament bulb and is two bulbs in one. One filament provides a beam of light directed towards the kerb and is known as ‘dipped beam’. Consequently this allows the driver to light up the road ahead without blinding oncoming traffic.
Should the driver want to see far ahead then a driver can switch to the main beam filament circuit. This main beam circuit is directed further forward and as a result could dazzle any oncoming vehicles.
The brake lights are switched on automatically when the driver operates the brake pedal. The brake light switch allows current to flow to the brake lights and back to earth by completing a circuit.
Many Indicator bulbs today are orange in colour and flash orange when the indicator is switched to on. After a few years of continuous use a common fault with this type of bulb is that the orange coating over the paint burns off and instead of seeing an amber light the indicator begins to shine white. This is a reason for a vehicle to fail its MOT and is usually a simple repair.
